LDPE and HDPE Plastic Bags

LDPE bags and HDPE bags are the workhorses of commercial food handling. Low density polyethylene bags are soft, stretchy and strong, while high-density polyethylene bags are thinner, tougher and more tear-resistant for their weight. Disposable King stocks two heavy-duty options for trade customers: the LDPE 20 kg Butcher Bag (850 x 450 mm, 65 micron, carton of 250) and the HDPE Tough HD Bag (850 x 460 mm, 31 micron, carton of 500).

Butchers, meat processors, poultry suppliers, seafood wholesalers, commercial kitchens and warehouses use these large LDPE plastic bags and HDPE bags to pack bulk meat, line crates and store large quantities of product. Both bags are sized for bulk handling rather than retail counter use. We supply businesses across Melbourne from our East Brunswick warehouse and deliver LDPE bags wholesale within 65 km of the Melbourne CBD. What Are LDPE Bags?

LDPE bags are made from low density polyethylene, a soft, flexible plastic that stretches before it tears. That stretch makes low density poly bags ideal for heavy, awkward or sharp-edged loads such as bone-in meat, because the film gives a little instead of splitting. LDPE is also clear to translucent, so staff can see what’s inside, and it performs well in cold rooms and freezers. Thicker LDPE bags, measured in microns (µm), carry more weight and resist punctures better.

What Are HDPE Bags?

HDPE bags are made from high-density polyethylene. HDPE film is stiffer and more tear-resistant for its thickness, so a thinner HDPE bag can carry a similar load to a thicker LDPE bag. HDPE has a slightly crinkly, frosted feel and is usually cheaper per bag.

Choose the LDPE butcher bag when puncture resistance matters most, such as for bone-in cuts or 20 kg loads. Choose the HDPE Tough bag when you need a strong, lower-cost bag for general bulk packing.

Common Uses

  • Packing bulk meat, poultry and seafood for wholesale.
  • Lining crates, tubs and bins.
  • Storing bulk dry goods in commercial kitchens.
  • Protecting stock in warehouses and coolrooms.

Tips for Handling Heavy Bags

Don’t drag loaded bags across benches or floors, as friction and sharp edges are the main causes of splits. Twist and tie the neck of the bag, or use a bag sealer, so it can’t open during transport. Place heavy bags inside crates or tubs when moving them, and keep bags away from hot surfaces, which can soften the film. Store unused cartons flat and out of direct sunlight to keep the film in good condition.

FAQS

1. What does LDPE stand for?

LDPE stands for low density polyethylene. It’s a soft, flexible plastic widely used for bags, liners and films. LDPE stretches before it breaks, which makes it strong for heavy or sharp loads.

2. What is the difference between LDPE and HDPE bags?

LDPE bags are softer, clearer and more stretchy, which helps them resist punctures. HDPE bags are stiffer and more tear-resistant for their thickness, so they can be thinner and cheaper. LDPE suits heavy meat; HDPE suits general bulk packing.

3. What is a 20 kg butcher bag?

A 20 kg butcher bag is a large, thick LDPE bag designed to carry around 20 kg of meat. Our LDPE 20 kg Butcher Bag measures 850 x 450 mm and is 65 micron thick, packed 250 per carton.

4. What does micron (um) mean on a plastic bag?

Micron measures the thickness of the plastic film. One micron is one-thousandth of a millimetre. A higher micron rating means a thicker, stronger bag, so a 65 micron bag is much thicker than a 31 micron bag.

5. Are LDPE bags food safe?

LDPE bags are widely used for food packing, including meat and poultry. If you need supplier documentation for your food safety program, contact the Disposable King team and ask what’s available for the product.

6. Can LDPE bags go in the freezer?

Yes. LDPE stays flexible at low temperatures, so LDPE bags are commonly used in coolrooms and freezers. Remove as much air as possible to reduce freezer burn.

7. Are LDPE bags recyclable?

LDPE is recycling code 4. Clean, soft plastic can be recycled through some soft plastics programs and commercial recyclers, but bags contaminated with meat or food usually can’t. Check with your waste provider.

8. How many bags come in a carton?

The LDPE 20 kg Butcher Bag comes 250 per carton and the HDPE Tough HD Bag comes 500 per carton.

9. Do you sell smaller LDPE plastic bags?

This range focuses on large, heavy-duty bags. For smaller food bags, see our freezer bags, produce rolls and zip lock bags.

10. Can I buy LDPE bags online?

Yes. You can order LDPE bags online and we’ll deliver within 65 km of the Melbourne CBD, except PO boxes and parcel lockers. Trade accounts are available for regular orders
